Odour burden from plastics, adhesives and pigments –
a long overlooked problem?

By Patrick Bauer, Jonathan Beauchamp, Philipp Denk1, Miriam Strangl1, Andrea Buettner1, Fraunhofer Institute for Process Engineering and Packaging IVV, Department of Sensory Analytics, Freising, Germany

Plastics, adhesives and pigments often exhibit unpleasant odours that can strongly affect consumers’ purchasing choices. At the Fraunhofer Institute for Process Engineering and Packaging IVV chemo-analytical methods, human sensory assessments and emissions measurements are used along the process chain to target odorant identification – together with their sources – with a view to developing methods to reduce or eliminate problematic odours.
