«A look back at 50 years of Coating»
By Michael Schmalz, Kroenert GmbH & Co KG
Congratulations and thanks to Coating International for 50 years of good, serious journalism. Based on the technical input of coating and laminating material producers, manufacturers of coating compounds and substrates, and manufacturers of coating machines, a mutual understanding of each other has been created in the industry. This interplay between partners has enabled developments, as explained from the viewpoint of a coating machine manufacturer below.

Converting breakthroughs in the last 50 years
By Ralph Simon, Area Sales Manager – Meech Static Eliminators
The advancement of static control over the past decades has been a product of demand requirements, specifically health and safety and better ionising systems. In that respect, it is interesting to observe how over a 50 year period Meech International has played a part in helping shape static control technology and arguably even influence some of its more recent developments.

Pilot coating facility for paper and board
Pilot coating facility for paper and board Vestra was founded as an independent pilot coating facility (LLC) on the premises of Papiertechnische Stiftung in Munich on 31 January 1994. The construction phase started in November 1994 and was completed by a start-up ceremony with many guests on 10 July 1995. The company’s first partners and board members – in addition to Papiertechnische Stiftung, whose managing director Professor Dr Heinrich Baumgarten had initiated the project – were the companies Avebe, Euroclay Hirschau (AKW), GAW, Jagenberg, Krieger, Omya, Rhône-Poulenc, Siemens and Sulzer-Papertec (since 1996 Voith-Sulzer Krefeld). This mixture of companies provided an ideal basis for the successful market launch of the new pilot coater.
