Do coating lines have to be long?

Abstract. Coating lines for papers, films, textiles, etc. are usually characterized by their considerable length. This is a consequence of the low drying rates that have to be dealt with nowadays in procedures for the drying of coated layers. The authors suggest the use of diffusion-optimized convection dryers that offer very high drying rates, so that it would become possible to build very short drying lines as soon as dryers of this type are put into practice. To demonstrate this, they describe a compact coating and drying series that their company has developed.
