Inertial roll alignment
Interview with Arun Nair, Pruftechnik S.E.A. PTE LTD
Why is it so important to keep rolls perfectly aligned? As a manufacturer, it is crucial to maintaining a quality product that meets demand with minimal overhead cost. In order to provide that quality in a sustainable timeframe while keeping cost low, many factors must be considered. While there are several key elements to converting and manufacturing as a whole, roll misalignment (Fig. 1) is often overlooked. Misaligned rolls cause uneven coating, tracking and telescoping during winding and roll surface wear. These symptoms dramatically reduce line speed, product quality and overall output volume while increasing downtime, cost of maintenance and scrap. It is paramount to recognize the importance of roll alignment in the converting process.
